Gridiron Greats
Yes, you never thought it would happen. Ktbuffy using her blog to talk about sports. But not just any sports. Oh, heck no. I'm here to talk about sports MOVIES. I love me some sports movies. All the thrill and excitement of a game, usually set to a musical montage of the best moments, with clear cut good guys to root for, and bad guys to boo. I like to make up my own little double headers. Say, for instance, an opening game of The Replacements followed by the more gritty Any Given Sunday (with Bring It On for a halftime show). Or, tonight's festivities: Invincible followed by Friday Night Lights. There's a bunch more football movies coming out this fall, too. Oh! And let's not forget other great sports movies, like The Cutting Edge, Stick It, The Rookie... The list goes on.
This poll thing seems to be working out pretty well, so tell me: what are YOUR favorite sports movies?

Any Given Sunday?
Toss in Days of Thunder and I'll have to start hurting people.

So, in random order of me thinking up sports movies, a list of sports movies that I have liked over the years:
Slap Shot (1979) – Best. Hockey. Movie. Ever. Some truly great scenes, and some funny bits that other sports movies have stolen over the years. See the original and enjoy.
Miracle (2004) – The Second Best Hockey Movie ever about the greatest group of players ever.
The Cutting Edge (1992) – Toe Pick, Moira Kelly, it’s all good.**
North Dallas Forty (1979) – Nick Nolte on a fictional NFL football team *cough*Cowboys*cough*. A classic from the get go as you watch Nick trying to get out of bed in the opening scene.
The Longest Yard (1974) – The Burt Reynolds one, NOT the one with stupid guy from SNL.
The Natural (1984) – A mythic movie that uses every sports metaphor to its maximum effect. Gorgeous cinematography.
The Bad News Bears (1976) – Sue me, I was a kid at the time this one came out, and it was a good movie for the age and the time, and again the Original not the remake.
Tin Cup (1996) – So many bad Golf clichés in one movie.
Brian’s Song (1971) – A TV movie that makes even the most hard assed of men hide their faces and say they are not crying. Possibly the best TV movie ever made.
Mean Machine (2001) – A GOOD remake of The Longest Yard with Vinnie Jones (RL dirtiest player in football) and Jason Statham. The scene where Vinnie Jones demonstrates all the tricks of the trade he used when he was a Professional player was priceless. Vinnie still holds the record in a professional game for quickest yellow card (3 seconds).
Bend it Like Beckham (2002) - A feel good sports movie that has some amusing takes on the genre.
Bull Durham (1988) – A classic Baseball movie, and I enjoy it every time I see it.
Breaking away (1979) – A movies that combines growing up and finding your way in the world with bike racing.
League of their Own (1992) – “Are you crying? Are you crying? ARE YOU CRYING? There's no crying, there's no crying in baseball.” hehe. :)
The Hustler (1961) – Paul Newman as Fast Eddie and Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats. Pool hall hustling and a classic movie of the genre.
Dog Town and Z Boys (2001) – A documentary about the birth of Skateboarding that shows why the clichés in sports movies ring true.
The Endless Summer (1966) – Yeah…when I saw this on TV in my early teens it made me want to move to California and surf…I got over it**. ;P
National Velvet (1944) – Mickey Rooney, Liz Taylor…’nuf said.
Honourable Mention:
M*A*S*H (1970) - For the football game at the end of the movie.
Dodgeball (2004) – Most for the DVD version of the show which has the extended version of the kid getting hit in the face with the ball.
Major League (1989) – Some funny, funny bits. Bob Uecker saying “Just a bit outside…” on a wild pitch still is a quote that I use at times.
**While some consider figure skating to be a sport, I do not. I have issues with anything that needs judges to determine the winner. Because of this, Strictly Ballroom almost made the list.
Boxing is also not a sport so no boxing movies.

A Knight's Tale. They just don't make sports like jousting anymore.

I was originally cast in "The Replacements". Unfortunately they "replaced" me with strippers.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story by far. I mean comon!
There's 'Les Boys' trilogy, which is a Quebec made film. Quite excellent, everyone should check it out.
While we're at it, Slap Shot of course. Damn, such a great movie.
