A geeky girl living in the big city, making her way, the only way she knows how... no wait, that's The Dukes of Hazzard. Who am I again? Oh yeah, a pop culture obsessed writer, publishing person, and occasional nerd. And I'm getting married. I talk about that, too.

End of the year gripe

Counting down to the final hours of my last day at work for the year. Our office is closed from tomorrow through January 4th. Huzzah! No work! Yippie! I deserve it.

Far more than I deserve the piddling little box of popcorn, candy, and cookies which I received as a Christmas present from the PTB here at the office. It's insulting, really. Other agents got little blue bags. I got a box of edible treats. Still, I'm being charitable about it. I'm giving it to the homeless man who hangs out on 59th Street. It's a Chrismukkah miracle!

Viggo!

I've got that holiday spirit, baby! Today is our office Christmas party, and there's a festive air in the hallways. Part of that may be due to our bonus checks, which arrived yesterday, but I'll pretend it's all about the gift-giving!

In other news, like many a fervent geek, I saw The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Though I did wait a whole day and half to see it after its midnight opening on Tuesday, so that's a kind of willpower. What can I say except... Viggo. Viggo, Viggo, Viggo, Viggo, VIGGO. Yummy! Maureen and I decided they could just make movies of him riding horseback (saw a preview for his new flick Hildalgo), with Orlando Bloom swinging a sword (a la Pirates of the Carribean), and we'd be happy campers. But horniess aside -- wow! What an amazing film, and towering testament to Peter Jackson's skill, and love of the work. It was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Film, and hopefully the Oscars will agree. If only so I get to see Viggo in a tuxedo.

It's like a little poem.

A Bit of a Day

I'm having a bit of a Day. Not a bad day, necessarily. But not really a good day either. The politics in my office annoy and disturb me. Things get passed to me to do that I have nothing to do with, other things that I am working on get sent out by other people, and I get criticized for responsing to a request with a specific "I" pronoun rather than the more general, non-specific "we." Whatever.

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat... Well, you would too if you saw all the food and candy and snacks that come into the office at this time of year. Luckily, a lot of it is really rich stuff that I have no interest in. Now, when they start tossing out the m&ms, that's when I get into trouble.

Oh! and I got an email today, out of the blue, from an old friend from high school! I haven't spoken to her in ages, and hopefully we'll get together over the holidays... I can see it now: we'll meet for drinks, I'll say a little about what I'm doing, and she'll spend the rest of the evening telling me about her problems with her boyfriend, his family, her family, work, school, friends, etc. etc. She's a sweet and wonderful person, but I have to admit, part of the reason I dropped out of touch for a while was because I just don't have the energy, not to mind medical degree! to be her psychiatrist. Grrr. Argh.

My first time

Ok, for some reason I've been inspired to keep a web log. A blog, as I understand the correct term is. Call me current! Years ago, I used to keep journals and diaries, and sure, I found them fascinating, sometimes, but who knows if other people will. So consider this a test run. I will update it as I see fit, or find time, or remember. One of those. Today is Tuesday, December 9, 2003.

My friend Yi Shun is quite the little blogger, so I'm throwing this one over to her, with a fun little link to her site. She's also a talented writer of YA fiction, for any possible editors loking for authors out there, a jewelry designer, and an avid adventure racist... racer... race-person. An all around Diva in the Dirt and Crafty Bitch.

Oh! And I have to share the wonderful news of the birth of my new little niece, Izabella Lillian. She was born November 26th at 11:24am, weighing 6lbs and 14 oz. She's cute as a little button! Below is a little shot of us together on the day she was born. Izabella is my brother Dan and his wife Alex's first child. It's so weird, yet wildly adorable to think of my big brother as a dad.
